1-2-3 Black

10th Grade Chemistry

We use chemicals everyday even though we may not think of them. We even know some reagents by their chemical names such as sodium cloride for table salt and sodium bicarbonate for baking soda. And it sounds very educated to call ordinary household bleach as sodium hypocloride. Here the students are combining several common chemicals with materials such as cereal and paper and observing the quick and dramatic effects. 1-2-3 Black! Fifty percent of the reactions turned black!

The students shared their notes and came up with the conclusion that all things containing starch will turn black with some of these chemicals. And they were right!i_123black_bi_123black_a
